What happens if I drive without a vignette or a route pass/on-board unit?

If you have not paid a vignette charge for the paid sections of the Republican road network (for road vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes), do not have a route pass for the route concerned or do not use a valid on-board unit or a GPS tracker to account for toll distances (for road vehicles above 3.5 tonnes), you are an offender and are subject to a penalty.

The detection of the violation is carried out through the electronic system and through the stationary and mobile cameras located on the road of the National Toll Administration. The control of the payment of a vignette charge is carried out by the authorities of the Ministry of Interior, as well as the Customs Agency, when the road vehicle leaves the territory of Bulgaria through a border crossing point.

The Bulgarian roads are operated by 295 fixed cameras and 105 cars, which control on a 24/7 basis, by relying on the registration number of the car and by checking in the system whether the relevant toll - e-vignette or toll charge has been paid.
